Welcome to The Columbus Foundation's Idea Table. We will periodically feature Foundation staff, nonprofit leaders, as well as leaders in the field of charitable giving who will present (or address) topics and field questions on our website. Once a question has been posted and answered, the question and answer will be reposted here.

Question:
What is a sustainable food system and why is it important?
Answer:
One definition of a sustainable food system is one that “meets the needs of the present generation while ensuring the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” We believe that everyone has a right to eat flavorful, fresh, locally grown food that is produced in a sustainable manner. The key is working together as a collaborative community to make that happen.Sustainable food systems are an important element in decreasing our carbon footprint. They represent a comprehensive way to address many of the social, economic and environmental issues that affect each of us in Central Ohio.
