ReelAbilities Columbus is part of the ReelAbilities: NY Disabilities Film Festival traveling program. ReelAbilities: NY Disabilities Film Festival is the largest festival in the country dedicated to promoting awareness and appreciation of the lives, stories, and artistic expressions of people with different disabilities. Initiated in NY in 2007, the festival presents award winning films by and about people with disabilities in multiple locations throughout each hosting city. Post-screening discussions and other engaging programs bring together the community to explore, discuss, embrace, and celebrate the diversity of our shared human experience.
Columbus has been chosen as the ninth city in the United States to present this traveling program. The multi-day event is presented by VSA Ohio, the state organization on arts and disability, and the Saul Schottenstein Foundation B. This is the first time Columbus and VSA Ohio will present a disability film festival in the central Ohio area.
Nine different films from Belgium, Canada, China, Israel, the United States, and the United Kingdom will be shown throughout the festival. Film venues include: The Columbus Museum of Art; Arena Grand Theatre; OSU Urban Arts Space; The King Arts Complex; and The Ohio Historical Society.
The festival also includes a free film screening for Columbus City School students on Tuesday, November 6th. The Israeli film, White Balance, centers around 12-year-old Itamar who has a deep passion for ice skating but is slowly losing his hearing and balance. He refuses to accept his doctor’s orders and parent’s wishes as he and new partner, Natalie, grow within a complicated world of adolescence.
