2012 OhioDance Festival and Conference

  • April 27, 2012 – April 29, 2012   |   10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

As a moving art, dance is constantly changing with the times.  Dance Matters: Dancing with History will investigate the rich history of dance while exploring the legacy contemporary dance is now creating.
During this festival and conference, BalletMet Columbus will be filled with master classes in contemporary, ballet, jazz, historical, world, and social dance forms and panel discussions addressing current dance trends.
This event will be conducted by dance professionals and special guests such as Dianne McIntyre, founder of Sounds in Motion and Marika Molnar, the director of physical therapy services to the New York City Ballet and to the School of American Ballet in New York. Sunday will conclude the event with a professional audition and a Wellness and Your Future in Dance Day, with session presenters from The Ohio State University Sports Medicine program for performing arts.

Schedule Overview:

April 27, 10:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.

  • A young people’s concert will be held on Friday, April 27, 2012 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
  • Students from Columbus public schools, AIMS, Canton public schools, Thiossane West African Institute, and BalletMet Columbus will participate in a Young Artists’ concert from 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. The concert is free and open to the public.
  • Event registration will begin on Friday, April 27, 2012 at 2:00 p.m.
  • Master classes and panel discussions will run from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

April 28, 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.

  • Registration will resume at 8:00 a.m.
  • Sessions will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
  • A performance and award ceremony at 7:00 p.m. and ending at 10:00 p.m. followed by a reception. This year, the OhioDance showcase of choreography will take on a new format. Selected Ohio choreographers will participate in a mini residency and then show their work and receive feedback from conference participants. In addition will be special performances by invited guest artists. In memory of Maggie Patton, a dancer, choreographer, educator, OhioDance board member and Columbus native, OhioDance will award a monetary scholarship for an outstanding dance student. Other award recipients are Dianne McIntyre, for outstanding contributions to the advancement of the dance art form and Loren Bucek, for outstanding contributions to the advancement of dance education.

April 29, 10:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

  • From 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., will be a “wellness and your future in dance day”, a look at preparations for dance careers, dancer health with injury prevention screenings; and professional auditions.
