Supporting Foundations

The Columbus Foundation has examples of individuals, families, and corporations that have all determined a supporting foundation was the best choice for their philanthropic objective.

This choice is often tied to one of these three primary goals:

    • Family: A goal to have a formalized structure that centers on involving multiple generations in family philanthropic activities.
    • Visibility: A desire to use investment options that fall outside of The Columbus Foundation’s many options for its funds.
    • Investments: Maintain a strong separate identity, much like a private foundation.

Supporting Foundations can be established with a minimum initial gift of $1 million, with the expectation that assets will grow to $5 million through current gifts or planned gifts. Once a supporting foundation is established, donors can depend on a basic set of services provided as well as more customized services such as investment policy and selection, family philanthropy or corporate giving resources, and grantmaking research based on your individualized needs.

Every donor has a different intent for establishing a supporting foundation. We encourage you to learn more about others who have established supporting foundations with The Columbus Foundation and how these existing supporting foundations operate. These real life examples will help you develop your own set of questions for a conversation with members of the Supporting Foundation or Donor Service and Development staff, who we encourage you to contact us with your questions.
