Columbus Dispatch Editorial: “Seeking Shelter”

On any given night, dozens of families in central Ohio are homeless. This situation is particularly hard on the children, who are victims of their parents’ misfortune or bad choices — or perversely, this community’s prosperity.

Central Ohio’s strong job market and population boom has translated into an improving quality of life for most residents. But struggling families are being left out of this progress. Many have lost benefits as the supply of affordable housing has tightened.

The result? A rise in family homelessness that has prompted a new community task force to identify ways to catch families before they fall into homelessness and to more effectively use resources.
