In the spirit of celebration, The Columbus Foundation’s philanthropy awards honor incredible legacies of generosity and innovation in our community. The following awards, presented at our Celebration of Philanthropy in September, lift up the generosity of donors, recognize the great work of a high-performing nonprofit organization, and shine a spotlight on a Columbus Foundation fund making a difference a half a world away.

2019 Harrison M. Sayre Award Winners: Joseph and Linda Chlapaty

Joe and Linda Chlapaty are terrific representatives of philanthropy in action. From their financial support and volunteer service for a variety of nonprofit organizations, to their commitment to investing in the future, both are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of others. The Harrison M. Sayre Award, established in 1990, is given in honor of the Foundation’s founder and 25-year volunteer director, and recognizes leadership in philanthropy in central Ohio. READ MORE


2019 Acorn Award: Lewisporte Area Flight 15 Scholarship Fund and Shirley Brooks-Jones

The inaugural Acorn Award, created to honor a Columbus Foundation fund doing remarkable things, was presented to Shirley Brooks-Jones and the Lewisporte Area Flight 15 Scholarship Fund. The fund, established in 2002, has awarded 291 scholarships to residents of Lewisporte, Newfoundland, following that community’s remarkable hospitality to Shirley and thousands of other rerouted passengers on September 11, 2001. 2019 Columbus Foundation Award: Alvis, Inc.

When Alvis was founded in 1967, it served just over 60 men who were returning to the community after being released from the Ohio Penitentiary. Last year, the organization served nearly 10,000 men, women, young adults, and children, providing them with a range of treatment programs and services based on each person’s needs. Created in 1986, The Columbus Foundation Award recognizes organizations that have made a difference in the quality of life in our community. READ MORE
