The scholarship was created by a generous donor who is a former occupational therapist and teacher, with the goal of supporting students in financial need in the Franklin County community.

The Marian and Wayne Sinsel Fund was established by Marian Sinsel to honor her late husband Wayne. From childhood, Marian was hearing impaired, and understood the importance of quality and affordable services to those with hearing loss, and is designed NOT to displace state or federal funding. Marian Sinsel was born August 17, 1920 and graduated from Steubenville High School in 1938. Marian and Wayne Sinsel owned a Western Auto Association Store in Logan, Ohio, later changed to Sinsel’s Craft Place.

The scholarship was created by Paige Doucette Crane, who attended Walnut Ridge High School in 1973 and 1974. She was a member of the newspaper and year book staff, both of which better prepared her for college, and highlight the importance of extracurricular activities for all students. The scholarship demonstrates her belief that students in Columbus City Schools, and Walnut Ridge High School in particular, should have the opportunity to follow their desire and abilities to higher education; the scholarship seeks to encourage them to realize this goal.

Jean Terry Grant was born April 27, 1930, to Herbert and Flossie Mae Terry. She attended elementary and secondary schools in Washington, D.C., and was a proud graduate of Howard University. She married Joseph S. Grant in 1955; they had two children, Terry and Erica Grant, both deceased. Joseph was a fighter pilot in the Vietnam War and was a member of the famous the “Dirty Thirty” Aid Squadron, he was also a business owner and Executive Director of the Tiger Woods Foundation. Jean was a librarian for the City of Columbus and a consultant for the Ohio Department of Education, Office of Teacher Licensure, where she retired. Jean enjoyed painting, reading, gardening, interior design, singing, and philanthropy. Jean and her husband traveled extensively throughout the world. She created and directed successful performing art shows in the 70’s and 80’s. One of her last wishes was to ensure that a scholarship fund was created to support deserving African-American art students from Columbus City Schools.

Wayne Vanderhorst was born and raised in a small west-central Ohio town of 3,200 people. He loved math and bookkeeping in high school, after which he attended and graduated from Columbus Business University. He started in the banking industry in 1962 in the bookkeeping department, and retired in 1999 as the Assistant Vice President of Accounting. He continuously improved himself and learned the upgrades in the banking industry. Wayne always wanted to help high school graduates get a start in the college world. His goal was to help students who have financial need with assistance in paying for school. In his first years, he struggled financially, but never quit, and we hope this scholarship will help many students take that first step.

Matthew Curtis Roach was a student at West Liberty-Salem High School who unexpectedly passed away his senior year in 2022. As a way of remembering Matt, his family wanted to carry his legacy of always willing to be a blessing to someone who needs assistance.

Stephen and Nancy Van Heyde established this fund in memory of their son, Ian. Ian was a senior at Whetstone High School and a distinguished student in culinary arts at Northeast Career Center. The purpose of the fund is to preserve the memory of Ian, an ever-smiling teenager, and to perpetuate his reputation for helping others. As he was intensely interested in a career in culinary arts, the scholarship fund will award scholarships to students pursuing postsecondary studies in the culinary arts, food management, or restaurant management.

The scholarship provides post-secondary educational assistance to the outstanding scholar of each graduating class of Whitehall-Yearling High School, in Whitehall, Ohio.

The fund was established by John White, Sr., in memory of his late wife, Elsie Mae, who was concerned with improving the lives of disadvantaged children. Mrs. White was a self-taught woman with impeccable manners and style. The fund provides scholarship assistance in the form of tuition and fees to African-American students who are pursuing higher education or training at both the undergraduate and graduate levels to achieve specific goals. This scholarship is primarily for students attending, or planning to attend, land grant colleges and universities.
