Jazz in the Classroom

Jazz Arts Group (JAG)

Support for Jazz Arts Group (JAG) will help bring free sheet music, lessons, instruments, and equipment to seven schools in its Jazz Lab program.

RAISED $1,190.00
GOAL $7,000.00

The mission of Jazz Arts Group (JAG) is to advance and celebrate the art of jazz through performance and education. JAG believes that jazz represents the best about community—a collective goal achieved through creativity, expression, respect, and individuality.

JAG’s Columbus Youth Jazz Lab in Schools program works directly with Columbus City Schools (CCS) middle schools to engage students in musical expression through jazz. Professional musicians sit side-by-side with the students, teaching them the fundamentals of jazz. Students grow as performers as they develop the courage to take solos, be creative, and express themselves in ways they never imagined.

"My students walk away excited and are empowered from working with our friends at Jazz Arts Group. These young people also learn about the power of improvisation in jazz. It challenges them to really think and be creative. We have been able to inspire these young musicians with AMAZING interactions with professional jazz artists!"

—Bruce Carlson, Dominion Middle School Band Director

Support for this Better Together project will enable seven schools to participate in the Jazz Lab program. Over four visits, JAG will provide free sheet music, lessons, instruments, and equipment, along with an invitation to JazzFest, where students can play for one another and receive feedback. With the return of in-person programs, your donation can help JAG continue to make jazz a key part of students’ music education.

We are Better Together!

"The pandemic ripped away our students' opportunity to play and learn together with other musicians, a core element of jazz music. It is incredibly important that we return to Columbus City Schools' classrooms this fall and reignite the excitement for jazz music in our students."

—Byron Stripling, Columbus Jazz Orchestra Artistic Director
