New Nurseries for Life
Lower Lights Ministries
Create possibilities for newborn children by providing a safe, stable environment for the vital first year of life.
Lower Lights Ministries (LLM), one of the 2020 Five Nonprofits to Watch at The Columbus Foundation, is a holistic community development organization that seeks to break cycles of poverty and addiction through supportive housing and individualized mentoring programs. Through these services, LLM reaches some of Columbus’ most vulnerable populations. Established in 1991, LLM programs focus on creating a supportive community environment where participants are connected to a wide range of positive relationships with staff, volunteers, and peers. In this safe space, participants are able to address barriers, achieve personal goals, and develop into leaders.
According to a 2017 report from the ADAMH Board of Franklin County, 70 percent of children in protective custody under the age of one have a drug-involved parent. To support vulnerable new mothers who have a history of addiction, LLM’s Family Housing program is providing private single-family homes and comprehensive services during the vital first year of life and beyond.
“Years in law enforcement allowed me to see firsthand the impact of unstable family environments. Any project that supports new mothers seeking to build strong homes for their children is something I want to be part of. In fact, I plan to lead the team furnishing these new homes and nurseries!”
— Amy Hanes, retired major, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office
Support for this Better Together campaign will completely equip four nurseries for a mother and infant. Your generous donations will fund the items needed to create a safe and enriching home environment for new mothers and their babies. These nurseries will include a crib, changing table, feeding chair, baby monitor, high chair, baby clothing, and other necessities. Once a nursery has been funded, LLM also provides meals, house cleaning services, sessions of in-home childcare, and lactation/feeding support. After this initial phase, women will be connected to drug recovery services, professional counseling services, parenting support, peer-mentoring, financial literacy classes, employment support, home management classes, and life-skills coaching.
With your generosity, LLM can help create an environment that allows women to develop into strong, healthy mothers who are equipped to raise strong, healthy children.
