Water Safety for All
YMCA of Central Ohio
Support for YMCA of Central Ohio will help kids gain confidence in and around water.
The YMCA of Central Ohio is committed to strengthening community by connecting all people to their potential, purpose, and each other. Working locally, it focuses on empowering young people, improving health and well-being, and inspiring action in and across communities.
YMCA instructors are trained in a national Safety Around Water curriculum that teaches children essential skills to help them avoid danger. Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death for children ages 5 to 14, and Black children are 40 percent more likely to become a drowning victim than their white counterparts.
Support for this Better Together project enabled kids in the Near East Side community to participate in a six-week group swim lesson at no cost to families. Thank you for helping kids gain confidence in and around water!
We are Better Together!
“Water safety is very important and is something that should be taught in every household. Our goal is to make sure the knowledge and skills are taught to stay safe and calm around all bodies of water. Being in the water doesn't have to be scary! It can be fun and relaxing if you know the proper skills."
—Megan McFaul, Aquatics Experience Director
"Drowning is the second leading cause of death for kids ages 5-14; basic swimming skills provided through this Better Together project will reduce preventable drowning deaths for children most at risk in our community."
—Chris Wyche, Advisory Board Chair
